Tell Me A Tune
This week at ESF South Island School, Youth4Youth held a session on the connections between music and AI. Students learnt about the ways AI is being used in the music industry for auto-tuning when singers go off tune, recommending songs based on what genres you listen to, smoothening scratchy audio and composing songs based on a few key words.
Students were able to explore Soundraw, an AI music generator that allows you to create and compose original music by selecting your preferred mood, genre and theme. We had a very thought-provoking class discussion about the benefits of AI in music and the history of AI in music, from creating a piano piece composed by a computer capable of pattern recognition to creating AI that could outperform human composers. It was very interesting to discuss Experiments in Music Intelligence (EMI), an AI program that performed better than a human in a task of recreating a piece similar to Bach’s style. Students also enjoyed exploring Mubert, a software that can generate an audio track of a specific length, genre and mood. Both of these softwares are very useful for students in subjects like Music, Drama and Media!
